About the Department

The Mechanical Engineering program at Ideal Institute of Management & Technology provides a broad-based education that emphasizes the fundamentals and basic laws in mechanical, thermal and fluid sciences. The development of mathematics, science and engineering skills in students are addressed in the choice of courses. Engineering design is part of many of the courses from the very first semester. Further emphasis on design is placed in courses such as machine design, design for fabrication. Students are given the opportunity to use modern computer aided design and mathematical modeling tools. Students also develop skills to apply theory to design experiments that demonstrate their understanding of fundamental laws in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and Mecatronics.

Mechanical engineering has applications in all phases of industry, including such challenging fields as aerospace, materials, design, and product reliability and safety. Mechanical engineers consider fluid mechanics, design, thermodynamics, mechanics, controls, materials and heat transfer in addressing problems. We have specially designed SEMINAR LAB for carrying out projects and seminars of final and pre-final year students.

The department’s curriculum provide students with the opportunity to learn to think creatively and logically, and the use of new-found knowledge to address complex problems.



Its main objectives are:
  1. to learn various principles of Mechanics used in our day to day life.
  2. To analyze the laboratory results (data processing, variability and significance) and the validity of the results
  3. To give students the background of experimental techniques and to reinforce instruction in Engineering Mechanics principles.
  4. To provide students with exposure to systematic methods for solving engineering problems.
  5. To discuss the basic Mechanical principles underlying modern Engineering Mechanics and to create an understanding of assumptions that is inherent to the solution of engineering problems
  6. To build necessary theoretical background for design and construction of foundation systems.This laboratories is equipped with all necessary equipments.

Thermodynamics LAB

The lab includes equipment to demonstrate the principles of Air compressor, Steam boiler (water tube and fire tube), Diesel engine, Petrol engine, and Four Stroke Cylinder Petrol engine test rig with Mohr’s Test facility, four stroke single cylinder Diesel Engine Test Rig., Steam turbine, Steam engine.

Fluid Mechanics LAB

It has a variety of flow measuring Devices, venturimeter, weirs, notches, orifice meters and couple of equipments for flow study techniques for estimating losses in pipes, study of impact of jets over vanes, water turbines, Pumps, Hydraulic Ram and other equipments.

Manufacturing Science LAB

Lab consists of experiments regarding machine shop and welding shop. In machine shop experiments are performed on lathe, capstan lathe, shaper, slotter & milling, drilling, and grinding machine. In welding shop different types of welding joints such as lap, butt, corner, T- joints of same work piece are fabricated using different welding techniques such as Gas and Arc Welding . This lab enables the students to get thorough knowledge of different metal cutting processes and fabrication processes used in industry.

Measurement & Metrology LAB

Need of the lab is to determine the true dimension of the part and to convert the physical parameters into meaningful numbers. In this lab there are various types of experiments that can be conducted like Linear measurement, Angular measurement, pressure and temperature measurement, Surface roughness measurement, strain measurement, study of profile of different specimen (Such as screw thread, gears, irregular surfaces).


This lab includes estimation of heat conduction in composite wall, natural and forced convection related equipments and a number of other equipments.

Fluid Machinery LAB

The purpose of this laboratory is to reinforce and enhance understanding of the fundamentals of Fluid Machinery. The laboratory experiments are designed to demonstrate the applications of the fluid mechanics principles and provide a better understanding of the theoretical approach. The main aim is to understand fundamental concepts and significance of various experiments like Impact of Jet, Pelton Turbine, Francis Turbine, Kaplan Turbine, Hydraulic Ram, Centrifugal Pump and Reciprocating Pump.

Theory of Machines (Dynamics of Machines) LAB

This lab includes Gyroscope, Whirling of shaft apparatus, Governors, Gear & Gear train, Simple Chain Mechanism, Slider Crank Mechanism etc

Refrigeration and Air-conditioning

In RAC lab student gets the information about the working of refrigeration and Air conditioning systems. In this lab student study and perform eight experiments in two groups. In first group of experiments student gets the information of expansion devices, evaporators, main component of air conditioning system and working of window air conditioner. In second group of experiments student will study air washer and calculates the different performance parameters of refrigeration test rig, air conditioning test rig. At least one industrial visit for students to any cold storage plant or central air conditioning plant has been made a part of our RAC lab curriculum.


This lab has state of the art equipments and drafting 2D and 3D and computer-aided manufacturing. The various software’s incorporated for this purpose are AUTO CAD and SOLID WORKS.


Workshop practice lab consists of experiments regarding machine shop, welding shop, foundry shop, fitting shop, sheet metal shop, carpentry shop, blacksmith shop. In machine shop different types of metal cutting operations are performed on lathe machine. In welding shop arc welding and gas cutting operations are performed. In foundry, mould making process is demonstrated. Different types of fitting operations, smithy operations (using hand smithy), wood working operations (using carpentry joints), sheet metal operations (making objects such as funnel, tray) are also performed in this lab. This lab enables the 1st year B Tech students (all braches) to get basic knowledge of all manufacturing processes (as per the curriculum) used in the industries.
